The Service
What should I expect when I walk through the door?
There should be someone to greet you. If you have any questions, they should be able to answer them for you. King of Kings members are generally friendly, so don't be surprised if you are approached with introductions by members or the Pastor. If Pastor meets you before service, don't be surprised if he welcomes you in person during the announcements before the service starts.
How do the bulletins work?
The bulletins can be confusing at first. There are generally three parts:
1) An outer sheet which has the order of worship and hymn numbers. The important things to get from this is hymn numbers and any special prayers we are using that day. (See next question for more details.)
2) The "Celebrate" Insert, which contains the Prayer of the Day, the Readings, the Psalm; the Gospel, and the Prayers of the Church. You will need to keep this sheet handy to read from when cued.
3) Finally, the weekly announcements, which keep you up to date on the many activities at King of Kings. (This can be set aside and read after service if you like.)
What Hymn Book do you Use?
We are now using the Evangelical Lutheran Worship book.
Where are the Hymn Books Found?
The books are found in the back of the pew in front of you.
What type of music do you have during Service?
We have a Chancel Choir and a Bell Choir that perform on alternating weeks during the school year. Generally, there is a good mix of both contemporary and traditional hymns. We do not have a "praise band". But we are looking in to starting a more contemporary service in the future.
Communion
When do you have Communion?
Communion is served every Sunday.
Who can partake in Communion?
We welcome to the Lord's table all who are baptized and who continue to live by God's promises and believe that Jesus Christ comes to us through the bread and wine, and he is truly present with us in his body and blood. You are invited to come as families; the children will receive a blessing.
Do I need to talk with the Pastor before receiving Communion?
Generally no. See above.
How is communion served?
Members of the congregation sit until guided by the Usher to approach the altar down the center aisle. Before the altar there are trays filled with individual cups. The cups in the center of the trays are filled with grape juice, for those who do not want wine. For those who want wine, they select an empty cup. Either way, members bring their cups to the Altar railing, where if able, they kneel in the next available space towards the outside of the Altar. If one is not able to kneel, standing is welcome. If one can not come to the railing at all, Communion can be given within the pews, but please let the Pastor know before the service. Once at the railing, the Pastor, Assistant Minister or Communion Assistant will hand you a piece of bread, saying, "This is the body of Christ, given for you." You place the bread in your mouth and eat it. Then a second Communion assistant will fill empty cups with wine, and say "This is the blood of Christ shed for you." When you are ready to return to your seat you will leave the Altar railing, placing your empty cup into a basket at the side of the church.
If you have allergies to wheat bread, please let the church staff know. If possible, alternative arrangements will be made.
After the Service
Do you have a Coffee Hour or Fellowship on Sunday?
Yes. We have time for fellowship between the two Sunday services. Generally there is coffee, tea, punch and doughnuts. There is no charge, but a free will offering covers the cost, with any extra monies going to WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America for all the services they provide.)
Do you have Sunday School?
Yes. There is Sunday School for children from 3 years old through high school on Sunday between the two services (around 9:15)
The children 3 years old - 5th grade participate in a Workshop Rotation Model "WoRM" Sunday School, where they learn about God's Word through Bible study and games, arts and crafts, cooking, and drama.
The Junior and Senior High youth have classes led by our Youth Director.
Is there Sunday School for Adults?
There are Adult forums most Sundays between services-around 9:15. The format of these forums vary from speakers, films, and/or Bible study.
